A study published in the journal Pediatrics, has outlined reasons why
children should eat porridge for breakfast. The main benefit is that
it could help combat childhood obesity by reducing hunger levels during
the day. The study was carried out on a group of children aged nine
to twelve years by researchers, from Oxford Brookes University.
Three groups of kids were given three different types of breakfast
based on their glycemic index (GI). A low GI (value of less than 55)
breakfast of muesli, porridge, a bran-based cereal or soya and linseed
bread was given to the first group. A low GI breakfast with added sugar
(value of above 55) was given to the second group. The third group received
a high GI breakfast of white bread and cereal such as cornflakes (value
between 75 and 100). The kids were subsequently assessed on how hungry
they felt during the day and on how much they ate at lunchtime.
The results found that the children who had a low GI breakfast of porridge
were less likely to feel hungry between meals and also ate less at lunchtime.
According to the Professor Jeya Henry, of the research team, this low
GI breakfast will help stop kids from snacking and will reduce lunchtime
intake. This is particularly important for children who are obese.
